The role of the Shaman was a powerful and respectful one, and was therefore sought after. A shaman would pass on their knowledge to a younger family member who was prepared and destined for this role. A lengthy apprenticeship followed where a novice was to acquire their master's skill and learn how to control the spirit helpers. The success of the Shaman was dependent on the powers of the spirit who were found in birds, insects, reptiles, constellations or other elemental forces.
