More people travel by plane in Alaska than any other state. Small planes, otherwise known as "bush planes" offer the only practical way to reach many remote areas of rural Alaska. Today, there is approximately one pilot for every fifty Alaskans, making the 49ths state the seventh busiest for air traffic in the nation. Often, Alaskan planes are outfitted with either floats or skis for easy take off and landing on bodies of water in remote areas where runways are unavailable.
