Minting of the Alaska State quarter began in 2008 as the 49th state accepted into the union. Alaska was purchased in 1867 from Russia for 7.2 million dollars, but it wasn't until 1959 that it became a state. Alaska reaches so far to the west that the international dateline had to be bent to keep the state all in the same day. This "great land" is 1/5 the size of all the other states combined and has twice as many caribou than people.
